Sydney to Kathmandu Flights: Airlines, Connections and Tips

Sydney to Kathmandu is one of the busiest routes for the Nepali community in Australia, whether you're going home for Dashain and Tihar, visiting family or showing Nepal to friends. There's no non-stop flight between the two cities, but plenty of good one-stop connections make the journey straightforward.

Here's how the route works, which airlines to consider and how to get the best fare.

• Typical journey time: from about 13 hours with a good connection, often 16–24 hours depending on the layover

Airlines and connecting airports

How to choose the right connection

• Fastest: connections via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur with short layovers usually give the shortest total time.
• Cheapest: routings via Guangzhou or Bangkok, or those with longer layovers, often cost less.
• Travelling with elderly parents: choose a layover of 2–4 hours. That's long enough for wheelchair assistance and a rest, but not exhausting. Avoid overnight layovers unless a transit hotel is included. See our seat tips for elderly travellers.
• Overnight layovers: they can save money but add fatigue. Check whether you'd need a visa to leave the airport.

Baggage allowances

Baggage varies by airline and fare type. Many economy fares on this route include around 30 kg of checked baggage, but some cheaper fares include less, or none. When comparing prices:

• check the checked baggage allowance for each fare, not just the price;
• remember that on a single ticket your bags are checked through to Kathmandu;
• pre-purchase extra baggage online if you need it. It's usually cheaper than paying at the airport.

When to book for the best price

• Peak seasons: Dashain and Tihar (usually September–November) and the Australian summer holidays (December–January) are the busiest and most expensive times. Book 3–6 months ahead.
• Cheaper periods: February–May and the Nepali monsoon season (roughly June–August) usually have lower fares.
• Be flexible: shifting departure by a few days, or flying mid-week, can save a lot.
• Watch for airline sales (see our airline sales guide) and set up a fare search early for your preferred dates.

Before you fly: checklist

• Passport valid for at least six months.
• Right visa for your trip. Australian and other foreign passport holders visiting Nepal can usually get a visa on arrival or apply online in advance.
• Check the transit rules for your connecting country.
• Arrive at the airport 3 hours before international departures.
• For the return to Australia, check biosecurity rules. Many foods, seeds and plant products from Nepal must be declared or can't be brought in.
